Trauma happens when we experience an event that is too overwhelming for us to process. It can be one event that happens suddenly and be unexpected and shocking, or trauma can happen continuously over numerous events. It can happen to children and adults.
Many women who have been active in prostitution or sex trafficking will have experienced trauma and need support to process and heal from these traumatic experiences, enabling them to regain a sense of safety and well-being.
Trauma can cause physical and mental health symptoms that can make it hard to cope with life. There’s no one “right” way to react to trauma, and trauma responses can look very different in different people.
It’s important to note that these responses are a natural reaction to stress and are part of our survival mechanism. However, when trauma is ongoing or unresolved, these responses can contribute to physical and mental health challenges.
